The free check-in baggage for domestic flyers is all set to be reduced from 20 kg to 15 kg and a host of other charges are on the way. Air India has decided to reduce the free baggage limit for economy passengers to 15 kg and will charge anywhere between Rs 200 to Rs 250 per kg for excess weight.
While AI is planning to implement this from next week itself to cash in on the holiday travel (summer break in north India begins this weekend), all other airlines are going to follow suit soon.
Apart from lower check-in weight, AI has also decided the extra charges it will implement in coming days. “We will have a charge for pre-selection of seats in place by next month. The amount is yet to be decided,” said an official.
International flights are going to be next. AI is going to re-examine the free baggage check-in allowed on flights between India and Gulf and southeast Asia. The current allowance for economy passengers flying from India to Gulf if 30 kg and from Gulf to India is 40 kg. The free baggage allowance between India and Southeast Asia is 30 kg.
